Autism Awareness Training (CPD Accredited)

Autism Awareness Training

Around 700,000 people in the UK live with autism, meaning autistic individuals are already part of your organisation and community. They may be your employees, colleagues, customers, pupils or service users. Despite this, autism is still widely misunderstood, and harmful misconceptions can lead to exclusion, poor communication, and unnecessary barriers.

Toucan Diversity’s autism awareness training is designed to challenge myths, increase understanding, and support more inclusive environments. Our training gives participants a clear, practical introduction to autism and helps them understand how autistic people may experience and relate to the world around them.

Group Size: 20 Members

Training Duration: 1 hour

Toucan Diversity’s Autism Awareness Training is CPD accredited with one point. It offers different perspectives from one of two trainers (see them below) who use their personal experiences of the condition. They give examples of the various coping strategies that have helped them as individuals.

Autism Awareness Basics

  • Autism is a developmental disability that affects how a person experiences the world and so relates to the people around them. As a result, it can be harder for those with autism to participate in daily family, work or social life.
  • Autism is usually diagnosed by a multi-disciplinary diagnostic team, including speech and language therapists.
  • Over the years, the condition has been given many different diagnostic labels. Due to the recent changes to diagnostic manuals, ‘autism spectrum condition’ is likely to become the most commonly used diagnostic term.
  • The exact cause of autism is still being investigated.
  • There are many misconceptions and misunderstandings about autism, partly due to the fact that it is an invisible disability.
  • About 700,000 people in the UK who live with the condition.
  • It affects more men than women.

Autism Awareness Training objectives:

  • To discuss own experiences of living with autism
  • To discuss the experiences of autism from a parent’s and sibling’s perspective
  • To identify the various traits linked to autism and how they affect a person’s life
  • To identify effective ways of dealing with autism

Training methods

  • PowerPoint presentation
  • Video work

Meet Our Trainers

A photograph of Emily Lawrence

Emily Lawrence

Emily Lawrence is passionate about volunteering; especially when it concerns autism. She wants to spread the understanding and help that she received as a child. This is the reason for her approaching Toucan Diversity and having a hand in Training.

She is a CPD-accredited trainer and has a unique perspective; having been a child with a severe language delay and other autistic traits, she is now able to communicate her experiences as an adult.

Emily was diagnosed with semantic pragmatic disorder (SPD) in 1995. SPD is an invisible disability that involves slower processing of language compared to the average person. It is linked to the autism spectrum.
