Visual Impairment Awareness Training
helps organisations build understanding, confidence, and inclusive practices for people with sight loss. In the UK, almost 2 million people are living with visual impairment, including around 360,000 people registered as blind or partially sighted. This means visual impairment is likely to affect your employees, colleagues, customers, volunteers, pupils, and service users.
Despite its prevalence, there are still widespread misconceptions and a lack of awareness about visual impairment. Visual Impairment Awareness Training challenges harmful stereotypes and improves understanding of how sight loss can affect daily life, work, education, and access to services.
Toucan’s Visual Impairment Awareness Training is delivered by expert trainers with lived experience of visual impairment. They share real-life insights, practical strategies, and effective adjustments that help remove barriers and create accessible, inclusive environments

Visual impairment awareness
Our accredited trainers have a lived experience of visual impairments and they will share their own experiences and strategies. This Visual Impairment Awareness course is CPD accredited with one point. Here are some facts about visual impairments
- Visual impairment is a term experts use to describe any kind of vision loss, whether it’s someone who cannot see at all, or someone who has partial vision loss”
- Many people experience some type of visual problem during their lives. Think how many people wear glasses or contact lenses to manage their inability to read small print or see objects far away.
- Damage or disease to any part of the eye or brain needed to process images can lead to visual impairment. This cannot always be treated by surgery or lenses.
- There are 3 categories of visual impairment. These are:
- blind
- severely visually impaired
- visually impaired/partially sighted.
Within these three categories, people will have varying levels of sight.
- Importantly, having the same eye condition as someone else does not necessarily result in shared experiences.
- Some people have multiple visual impairments, which require different strategies to be implemented.
Visual Impairment Awareness Training Objectives:
- To highlight the statistics surrounding visual impairment.
- To discuss own visual impairments, and how they affect everyday life.
- To identify various traits linked to visual impairments.
- To demonstrate effective ways of accommodating and supporting people with visual impairments.
Visual Impairment Awareness Training Outcomes:
- Participants will have a better understanding of specific visual impairments.
- Participants will acquire skills to enable them to support people with a visual impairment.
Meet Our Trainers
David Shervill
David Shervill is the founder of Global Music Visions, a community interest company that brings the benefits of music to blind, visually impaired, and disabled people by using music software technology.
David is a long-standing accredited Sight Impairment Trainer. His accreditation, which is a Level 3 in Education and Training, was sponsored and paid for by Toucan Diversity.
Tom Walker
Tom Walker is an accredited Sight Impairment Trainer for Toucan Diversity.
Tom has what is nowadays described as a ‘portfolio career’. In addition to working as a radio journalist and podcaster, Tom also delivers disability and communications training to a wide range of groups. These include university students, business people, children, and even people who have fallen foul of the law.
Tom obtained a 1st class honors degree in Psychology and has worked as a freelance BBC reporter, researcher, and producer, as well as a media relations specialist for central and local government.
