Understanding Mental Health – CPD-accredited
Course 1, 3 modules
Overview
Understanding Mental Health
Understanding Mental health is part of everyday life, yet it is often misunderstood, oversimplified, or only discussed when something goes wrong. In reality, mental health experiences are both common and complex. In the UK, around one in four adults will experience some form of mental ill health each year. Globally, it is estimated that one in seven people are living with a mental health condition at any given time. Most of us will either experience mental health challenges ourselves or support someone close to us at some point in our lives.
Understanding Mental Health is designed to build a clear, compassionate, and practical understanding of mental wellbeing and the many factors that influence it. Throughout the course, you will explore:
-
What mental health is — and what it is not
-
How experiences such as anxiety, depression, trauma, physical disability, and neurodiversity can affect wellbeing
-
The impact of stigma, assumptions, and language
-
The social and workplace factors that shape mental health outcomes
This course also focuses on practical skills. You will learn how to:
-
Recognise when someone may need support
-
Respond appropriately and safely during distress or crisis
-
Use respectful, inclusive, and non-stigmatising language
-
Make reasonable adjustments in workplace and everyday environments
-
Contribute to psychologically safer spaces
Mental health difficulties are not rare or exceptional — they are part of the ordinary human experience. This course is not about diagnosing or “fixing” people. It is about increasing understanding, reducing harm, and responding in informed, respectful, and supportive ways.
By the end of the course, you will feel more confident discussing mental health, recognising when support may be needed, and contributing to inclusive, non-judgemental environments in both professional and personal contexts.
