Jan Brookes MSc
Accessibilty Advisor
Jan is an Accessibility Advisor for Toucan
We are delighted to welcome Jan Brookes to our team.
Jan is an experienced accessibility advocate based on the Isle of Wight, dedicated to helping organisations create environments, services and experiences that are inclusive for everyone.
Jan’s story
With a background spanning advocacy, training and community leadership, Jan has spent many years working across the public, private and voluntary sectors to improve accessibility and remove barriers that prevent people from fully participating in everyday life. Her work combines professional expertise with lived experience, giving organisations practical insight into the real challenges disabled people face and how those barriers can be addressed in meaningful ways.
Jan supports organisations to better understand accessibility legislation, improve customer experiences and embed inclusive practices into their operations. Her services include accessibility auditing, consultancy, and implementation support, helping businesses and organisations identify barriers and make practical improvements that benefit both disabled people and the wider community.
Jan’s approach focuses on realistic, achievable changes rather than “tick-box compliance”. By helping organisations understand accessibility from both a legal and human perspective, she enables teams to build confidence, improve services and create genuinely welcoming environments for all users.
Jan founded and led Isle Access, a community organisation dedicated to improving accessibility across the Isle of Wight. Through this work she played a key role in initiatives aimed at improving access to public spaces, supporting inclusive activities such as adapted cycling, and providing advice to businesses and organisations seeking to improve accessibility.
Jan is passionate about the principle of inclusive design – the belief that when environments and services are designed to work for people with disabilities, they ultimately benefit everyone, from parents with pushchairs to older people and those with temporary injuries.
Today, Jan continues to work with organisations to embed accessibility into their thinking from the start, helping them create services and environments that are not only compliant, but genuinely inclusive and welcoming.
